KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

How One Couple Overcame Birthing Obstacles Through a Supportive Doula Network

“I’m so thankful that I was connected to this network of supportive and knowledgeable women through the network,“ Katelyn said. “Even if I’d planned on an epidural … I still would have wanted to have a doula to help walk me through the birth process and help me stay focused. I still would have wanted to go to Lamaze not only for me but so that my husband, mom and sister would have the tools to help me through my pain. I’m a new mom, and I’d never done any of this before, and I’m so glad I knew what was going on and what my options were.”  Read More >

“I went into labor on a Tuesday morning. Harper was born at 8:57am. She was 8lbs even and 22″ at 40.2 (2 days past my due date) weeks. Born January 3rd 2017. Initially, my husband and I sought to hire Mary when we thought our only birthing option was a hospital. This was our third baby and we wanted/needed that support person who would help us advocate for ourselves and see our birth plan respected. When Mary showed us other options for birth, we decided a home birth was the best choice for our family. As our doula she was available for any questions or concerns. Her experience brought things to our attention we may not have thought of (even this being our third baby). She helped educate our 5 and 3 year old on home birth, making it a normal process – not something scary. She also supported them during my labor and delivery. Our 3 year old held her hand and watched her sister’s entire birth! She used techniques that helped me manage pain and focus on my body’s innate knowledge of how to birth. She then showed my husband those techniques to help him help me beyond his emotional support and presence. She was really a doula for our whole family. This was, by far, our best birth experience. We felt more educated, supported, and given space to treat birth as the natural process it is. I was able to be fully emotionally and mentally present in my daughter’s birth because I was able to relax in the calm environment our birth team helped create. We also appreciated the texts checking in and the postpartum support. Postpartum support is so necessary but not often given. Our third child was the first birth we decided to have a doula with us. It was such a positive experience my husband and I know that we will be having a doula with us at any future births. I’m always excited when someone asks me about my birth experience so I can share with them how positive it can be!”

So glad we took Mary’s Lamaze class. It’s not just a class for people wanting an unmedicated home birth. I knew I wanted a hospital birth and was planning on getting an epidural and still found her class so beneficial. I ended up with the perfect birth and used so many things we discussed in class. From laboring at home as long as I could to the comfort measures and my husband also did such a great job helping me bring our daughter into this world because he was educated and knew exactly what to do and say. I highly recommend everyone taking her class, it doesn’t matter the location or the type of birth you are planning the education is the same and all will benefit!

I had Mary as a private Lamaze educator. In my option she went above and beyond what I was expecting. She gave me all the info on delivery and what was normal about hospital births and then things to think about as well. I was aware of some things but others I had no clue about and would have never thought to ask. She has been a wonderful resource. I have already recommended her to everyone that I know!!

Without Mary’s lamaze classes/having her at my birth, I doubt I would have had the completely unmedicated birth we wanted. A pregnant friend called to talk about my birth experience and asked if I thought a doula would be worth the money for her - I could not stress enough that a doula is worth every penny.

Mary Duke was my Lamaze instructor and the only way I could find home birth options in my community. Her network has helped hundreds (maybe thousands) of women find the birth resources they need. My Sunshine Birth Services can answer any questions you have. If they can’t, they will direct you to an expert that can through their network. Thank you, My Sunshine for your amazing advice and network accessibility!

Mary (My Sunshine Birth) is honest, real, knowledgeable, a wonderful educator, and an excellent mother herself! She is passionate about her work, and truly cares about the families she helps through the miracles and hardships of creating (and caring for) a new life. She even does political advocacy for the Kentucky Home Birth Coalition and other programs to help mothers in Kentucky to have more access to midwives and doulas. I recommend her as a doula/lamaze teacher/birth guru for anyone!

Learned a lot during Mary’s Lamaze classes in preparation for the birth of our daughter. We also received a lot of support from network providers during pregnancy and postpartum. So thankful I took this step for education!

Fantastic network. No matter what came up during our pregnancy and early parenthood they were johnny on the spot with answers and resources. We had a very hard time nursing the first month of our childs life and my sunshine was a life saver. We had two birth professionals and lactation experts in our home helping us. I am so glad that we have them in our life. I can’t recommend them enough to expecting families and new families.

An amazing group of support people, really making a difference in the birthing communities in Southern Kentucky. Top Notch photography, amazing Doula support, lactation support, postpartum doula, just wow. Wish all of this have been around 20 years ago, but I’m glad to see such a support network growing now for all the wonderful families out there welcoming new babies.
